Money in Real Life

Two numbers. One honest picture.

Why your payment total and your debt balance tell different stories—and how to track both without the confusion.

You make a payment. You check your balance. The numbers don’t seem to move by the same amount. It can be frustrating when you’re working hard to make progress.

Your payment log and your current balance answer two different questions. Keeping both gives you a clearer picture.

What have I paid?

Your payment log records the amounts you actually sent toward a debt. In Small Wins Club, those payments appear in your progress log and your monthly activity chart.

What do I still owe?

Your posted balance is the amount your lender currently shows you owe. Interest, fees, new charges, credits, and when transactions post can affect it.

For credit cards, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that many issuers calculate interest daily. That is one reason a payment total and a balance change can look different. Your own lender’s statement is the place to check the details of your account.

A simple example

Imagine a balance of $1,000. A $100 payment brings it to $900. If $20 in interest is then added, the balance becomes $920. You paid $100, while the balance decreased by $80. This is an illustration, not a projection for your account.

Keep your tracker honest

  • Log the payment you made.
  • Check your lender’s latest posted balance.
  • Enter that balance separately when it changes.
  • Date your updates so you know what you’re comparing.

Recording a debt payment in My progress adds to your payment total. It only changes the debt balance when you also enter a new posted balance. Savings contributions work differently: they add to the savings amount in your tracker.

Your next small step

Open one goal. Check its latest balance against your own records. If something needs correcting, use the edit button on the goal or a payment entry.

You can appreciate the effort you put in and keep an accurate record of where you stand. Both count.
